A Lua/ReaScript workflow that imports audio from a copied YouTube or SoundCloud link directly into a REAPER session.
Facts
- Roles: Implementation
- Year: 2024
- Version control: Git
- Language: Lua / ReaScript
- Host app: REAPER
- Status: Completed
Case file
- Outcome: Reduced friction when pulling online references or samples into an active session without breaking creative flow.
- Workflow result: Turned a multi-step download, convert, import, and cleanup process into a single REAPER action.
- Context: Clipboard-driven audio import helper for fast reference gathering and sampling sessions.
Problem
When I am working in REAPER, grabbing a quick reference from YouTube or SoundCloud usually means leaving the session, downloading the file, converting it if needed, then importing it back into the project. That is too much friction for a task that often happens while comparing ideas or building a temporary reference track.
What the script does
The script reads the latest supported link from the clipboard, starts the download in the background, shows progress, imports the resulting audio into the current REAPER project, and removes temporary files after the import. The useful part is not just the download. It is the fact that REAPER stays responsive while the task runs.
Why it matters
This is a small utility, but it shows the kind of technical work I care about: removing boring steps from audio production without asking the user to change tools. A good workflow script should disappear once it has done the job.
