A clinical, unstable soundtrack for a theatre performance staged at La Ménagerie de Verre.

Facts

Purgatorium is a theatre performance conceived by Alexia Vergès, staged in June 2026 at La Ménagerie de Verre. The project questions the institutionalization of care, the way the norm defines madness, and the violence of a psychiatric system that sometimes claims to heal through coercion. In a human-sized vivarium, two characters drift across a wasteland and wait for a support group that never comes. Around them, the real testimonies of psychiatrized people slide the stage between documentary, hallucination, and an intimate closed-door love story.

For this performance, Alexia Vergès commissioned five tracks from me. The first sets a simple, memorable theme, designed to introduce the wasteland atmosphere that runs through the whole piece. The second starts from an ambience recreated on the Korg Minilogue, before the entire sound is contaminated by an ambulance effect built with a frequency modulation that rises and falls. The third is composed solely from electrocardiogram samples. The idea was to make the soundtrack exist between musical motif, medical signal, and unstable matter, as close as possible to the project's clinical and mental tension.
